Wow, Craig! That was terrific. Informative, entertaining, and even inspirational. I had read your telling of this story in text, but it just didn’t do it justice.

Well, here’s another photo to add to your collection. (I sent it to Doug a month or so back.) https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/SNGe1zhLrZgI_IXOT4YyCdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink This is in the Smithsonian Air and Space museum at the top of the stairs to the lower gift shop. For those that don’t know, those stairs lead to this: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Ln3AEvyLBpYJ0bDJYTrUKdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink So your art is just a short walk away from the real thing.

    Congratulations. You’re living the dream!

(BTW, you didn’t include a credit for the Brisco County, Jr. theme.)

Just about anything that has the Buckaroo Banzai theme in it has to be good!

Very inspirational and insightful and just plain entertaining!.

    *chuckle* nice work buckaroohawk.

Got my copy while I was holiday in New York. At the NBC Store @ the Rockefeller Centre. How tourist is that? :p

  7. December 5, 2011 at 11:59 am

Thank you all very much! I’m glad people like the cover and are enjoying the video. It took a loooooong time, but I had fun making it. I really appreciate the kind words!

  8. December 5, 2011 at 12:47 pm

Love the video. I’ve had a copy of that original Probert print for years, and this is a fine tribute!

(So….when are the prints of this one gonna be available? ;D)

    • December 6, 2011 at 1:06 am

If I were allowed to sell prints, I’d have stacks of them ready to go, believe me! I’d love to have a poster-size version of it myself. Maybe Doug can speak to The Powers That Be about that. ;-)

    Craig,

You, sir, are a goofball. I admire that. :D Smashing work, man. And there’s nothing like a bit of good art direction to get you creating stuff better than you ever thought you would! That’s a smashing tribute.

Buddy I had no idea this was your image. Simply stunning work. All the passion and all those hours of hard work have paid off for you. Loved the video ! Huge congratulations from me mate. That is just fantastic for you. Here’s wishing you further success .

Right on, dude, that was a lots of fun! Thanks for puttin’ that together. Congrats on your fine work! Love the family and friends support. Now is “Cheddar” the kitten with the calendar? Too cute =^..^=

Thank you, deg! I’m glad you think I did right by the other artists featured in the calendar. My biggest fear was that the cover wouldn’t live up to the standards set by everyone else.

Yes, Cheddar is the “kitten with the calendar.” I’m told by his owners that the photo is completely candid. Cheddar plopped himself down next to the calendar as they were preparing to take other photos. I liked it so much I had to include it. Who knows, maybe Cheddar is an ancestor of Data’s cat, Spot. :-)

Well done! It’s an honor you well deserve, because that was a great update to Mr. Probert’s original artwork. Which in itself is probably the best artwork done of the original Enterprise ever made.

  13. December 6, 2011 at 1:02 am

Once again, I can’t thank you all enough for the kind words. I was a little worried about the “Friends & Family” section because 99% of viewers will have no idea who those people are, but it was important that I include them because they’ve all shown me such enthusiasm and support … even the ones who aren’t fans of “Trek.” The video is a Thank You Card as much as it is a … is documentary the right word? … and I wanted them to know much I appreciate them. I’m glad you’re all enjoying the video and (dropping a hint here) keep your eyes open for a possible sequel.

Outstanding and I thoroughly enjoyed this! Well done on all counts. Love the bit about Photo Shop too! That program has saved my miserable CGI rear many a time!

The cover is BREATH TAKEING! Would love to have a poster size print. Any plans like that in the works?

    • December 7, 2011 at 1:25 am

I would LOVE that! Unfortunately I have no knowledge of any such plans. I’m lot allowed to sell prints of it because the subject matter is copyrighted and trademarked, but perhaps Doug could speak to someone about that. What say you, our fearless, gunslinging leader? :-)

I haven’t bought the calendar in years, but I just might this year for the cover alone. Add me to the list of wanting a nice print of it. Great work, thanks for sharing the process and rough drafts! One definitely gets a better appreciation of something if one sees how it came together.

    Mr. Frey,

As I’d mentioned some time back it’s peculiarly gratifying to see a fellow Max user in this sea of Lightwavers make this kind of splash. Cute video, too: I’d ask what it felt like to be given this kind of opportunity so unexpectedly (what David Gerrold once referred to as “the chance to go from s**t-shoveler to Beautiful Person all in one jump”), but your smiley-face character did the job very well, assuming an exhilarating mixture of euphoria and pure terror was what you meant to convey. :-)

Again, my sincere congrats. Andy Probert’s amazing depiction of the two Enterprises was one of the best-conceived images in the history of the Trek franchise, and, needless to say, you and Doug Drexler really did it justice. Peace.

    Craig,
That was awesome. I remember seeing that magazine myself years ago and I loved that image. That you have been able to take it to such heights is, well, as I said , awesome.

I have bought a few SOTL calendars over the years (not as many as i wished I had) and I plan to make SURE I get this one. Thanks for the great work.

    The Match Game theme! Chortle!

Thanks for the insight into the creative process…

  20. December 11, 2011 at 12:59 pm

Another round of “Thank you!” from me to everyone!

doubleofive: You won’t be disappointed with the 2012 calendar. There are truly amazing images in there! And another call for a poster version of the cover! Doug, is there any way we can make this happen?

Michael Hall: Mr. Frey is my dad. Please call me Craig. :D I appreciate the kind words and I’m very happy the cover and the calendar have been so well received. Doug and the featured artists pulled out all the stops for this edition and the results speak for themselves. I’m also glad you liked the video. “Goofball” took direction very well. In my opinion he’s far too underrated as an actor. MAX users rule!

Jeff Kincaid: Thank you very much! Andrew’s original image has been an inspiration to me for years and I’m humbled that so many feel I was able to do it justice. Enjoy the calendar!

Eric N.: I’ve been waiting to see how many people recognized the “Match Game” music. So far, there have only been a few, but those few have enjoyed that part of the video. I’m glad you enjoyed watching it.

Sweet vid man more than I could ever do. HAH I got the personality of a log so all I could muster was a video breakdown :p It is cool your family and friends are into it. I do not think anyone I know (IRL) bought a copy.

I remember the original go at it and the WIP over at SFM So it was cool to see the image when I got my copies. Kudos mate.

    • December 18, 2011 at 11:46 pm

Thanks, MKF! I watched your image breakdown video and thought it was very cool. That’s something I wouldn’t be able to pull off, so let’s call it even on where our particular strengths and weaknesses might lie. :D

I’m very fortunate to have such support from my family and friends. Just when I think they can’t surprise me anymore, they always find a way to raise the bar!

I appreciate the kind words from you and everyone else I’ve heard from. Once again, thank you all so much!
