Nice shootin’, Tex
I’ve been a fan of Westerns since the ol’ Clayton Moore days, but I really got into it again when Tombstone came out. I was working at the Hollywood Wax Museum at the time, an we had an old gunbelt and six shooter from one of the figures that I adopted and spent HOURS doin’ just what you’re doin’. FUN!!!
Awesome, gotta post more of these!
Hey, Doug…is that a white knight on your holster, a la Paladin?
You know it!
That’s good stuff right there. I used to do stuff like that when I was in my teens and twenties, though my inspirations were Clint Eastwood (the man with no name
) and Mel Gibson when he was in Maverick. In fact, I even took an acting class in high school (I didn’t want to be an actor, I just needed another floating credit
) and I did a scene from Maverick where I did some of that stuff. I practiced for weeks using anything from pellet guns to video game guns with the chord removed. ;D
You’re getting really good at that stuff. I can definitely see why your hands are raw, especially your trigger finger, I’d imagine.
I’m starting to get through cut, bruise, and gash period about now. I’m getting better by the day. It’s amazing to watch the neural pathways adapt.
Yeah, that stuff will take it out of you, especially out of your hands.
Though, watching your video has made me want to try this stuff again. I have a replica Cold display piece, I’m tempted to pull it out and start twirling again.
Dammint! Colt, not Cold. (I ask you, what good is a spell checker if it can’t fix when you spell the word correctly but it’s the wrong word?
)
Very cool Doug. Only things your missing is your vest and cowboy hat.
Go, Paladug, Go!
Awesome! Now do that with a phaser
This is why Phasers SHOULD have had trigger guards! Kirk would definitely have had a few of these tricks up his sleeve. I think Sisco would have, too. Picard and Janeway, not so much. Archer may not have practiced skills like this, but I think, deep down, he was a two guns kind of guy.
This looks great for one month in. When will you have to put on a helmet with the blast shield down and try to shoot a floating “zapper” remote?
Enjoying the not sci fi aspect of it, and knowing where the current sci fi genre came from,
As a fan of the Western genre myself, I should have thought of that. It’s nice to get away from robots and laser beams every now and then and return to those thrilling days of yesteryear.
Nice, Doug. I couldn’t help myself but to think of that classic Clint Eastwood theme.
Way to go, Doug. I’m a revolver aficionado myself, though not much for single action.
I think it’s the limits of the single action that makes it interesting to me.
The return of a classic series, “Have Gun, Will Travel”! By the way, the series is still playing every Wednesday on movieplex, if you have it. To check the schedule on movieplex.com on Wednesday. Thank you.
Also, Encore Westerns plays it daily.
That is real cool Doug, though I have noticed a few things.
One you only get off one shot with all that Fancy fingerwork, i hope that one is enough.
Two, having fired many different types of weapons I know that the barrel gets hot, there is a point in your routine where you grab the barrel, watch for burns.
Three I am very jealous of that rig
Keep up the good work and look forward to more
Check it out when you can, but a real pro can get three shots off an make it sound like one. That’s faster than a semi automatic.
… beside, I ain’t lookin’ to shoot anyone. Just having a lot of fun.
All that gun twirlin is nothing but a bunch of fancy dancing. How tight are your groupin’s?
I’m yer’ hucklebearer\hucleberry. Take yer pick.
Nice movie quote, but can you keep all 6 within a quarter sized area?
Pretty close, Cap. Honest.
Learn to do that well and you’ll be in good company – look on Youtube for videos of Sammy Davis Jr. demonstrating his skills with a pistol.
Sammy was one of the fastest in Hoillywood. He taught Robert Culp for an episode of “The Rifleman”
I did not know that he (Sammy Davis Jr.) could do that.
Learned something new…
“We deal in lead…”
Very cool! The “spaghetti western” music works well, but that style of gun handling makes my imagination think of The Magnificent Seven era and Elmer Bernstein – big orchestra and big energy. If my neighborhood ever needs freeing from under the heal of a bad desperado cheiftain, we’ll give you the call!
Wire Paladin – San Francisco
Whatever you do Doug please dont do that with a loaded gun, your a great man and I hate to loose you and your blog!
actually do you actually shoot guns at a range or was this just for fun? not that it matters its just that if you say yes your a man after my own heart lol
as I’m a gun collector and shooter myself and a long time trek fan to boot as well.
Hi Kavinsky! Thanks, I appreciate the concern, but I’ve got more sense than that : ) There won’t be any negligent misfires here.
The gun I’m using is a “dry fire”. An exact operating replica in every way, but cannot be fired.
I do go to the range. My interest is pretty much the 1870s. I’ve a 3rd generation Colt SAA 7 1/2″, like Paladin, and a Winchester repeater like John Wayne uses in Stage Coach. They marry two of my favorite interests: history, and Hollywood.
Glad to hear it and I didnt doubt that you knew that its just that I always get nervous when I see something like this, so I just make a point to speak up.
and for me its mostly WW2 guns like the ones from the Indiana Jones films (the Walther P38 in particular, theres just something about that gun I love)
although my family has owned quite a few winchester lever action rifles along those lines and they’ve still got my great great grandfathers one that he bought new in 1912 and it is STILL like brand new, although while I’m not too much a fan of the SAA I still love to watch the “Man With No Name” films just for this kinda stuff he does with it, along with Lee Van Cleef and the black powder cartridge converted guns he uses in the good the bad and the ugly
So if I was to make like Wyatt Earp and tell you there are no guns allowed, how long would I last?
Nice moves, Shane
Now can you do that with a Phaser?
Nope
Some one has not seen ‘A Christmas Story’
- looks like fun though.
I HAVE too seen Christmas Story!
No matter how many times I watch this, it’s still awesome. I love it!
Matt’s awesome. Did you know he is working on BSG?
No I didn’t! Matt, spill!
I had to pull out my 1873 Colt replica earlier and do some twirlin’. 8) I’m rusty as hell but some of it comes back to you pretty quickly. I can’t do the tosses or anything like that and I don’t have a holster (I used to have one but don’t know where it is) but I can so some of the moves. It’s definitely something you have to practice a lot.
Extra credit: try twirling in your off hand or, even better, two guns at once. I used to be able to twirl pretty decently with my left hand but now I can’t do it. I have a smaller revolved that I can kind of twirl in my left hand but not nearly as well as I can in my right.
revolved = revolver (I really need to proofread better)
Very nice moves, Mr. Drexler! Actually, I’m not very sure, but I think this is the first time I’ve posted here. I’ve always wanted to ask you questions about your Trek work, but by the time I role by, they’re already several posts old. I grew up watching Trek (I’m 18 now, so I was watching Voyager on UPN as a little kid.)
By the way, with those aviators on, I couldn’t help thinking you look like Kevin Costner. XD
You need one of these:

I’ve been meaning to post an FYI that you can watch Have Gun, Will Travel weekdays at 6:40pm on the Encore Western channel.
I’ve caught a few episodes when I can, I am not a western fan by any means, but I rather like it. The clear linage between ’60s westerns and Star Trek is undeniable. Heck, I’ve now seen multple guest stars on HGWT that also came through TOS
Somehow I missed this Doug, but well done! I am seriously thinking about getting my own rig on which to hone my gun twirling skills! When I was younger I only had my Mattell “Fanner 50s” to practice with!
Of course “Paladin” didn’t twirl (that I know of), but you gotta deck out in your Paladin clothes and really show yer stuff!
Steve
ps – You might hint to James Cawley about “Paladin” doing a guest appearance in his “Wild Wild West” series! That would be cool!
Great coordination! I had a big laugh when i noticed the squirrel you obviously scared off around 1:48
