More Star Trek: Vanguard – From Pocket Books

+

(Above) My final for the latest Star Trek: Vanguard novel “Declassified” by Dayton Ward, Kevin Dilmore, Marco Palmieri, and David Mack .

Special thanks to Karen Schnaubelt Turner Dick, for encouraging us to use her father’s groundbreaking designs from the iconic, and best selling,  Star Trek Star Fleet Technical Manual.

(Left) A sneak peek at the action cover for the upcoming Vanguard adventure, “What Judgements Come” by Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore. I really enjoy doing book covers. It’s like getting to do a classic movie poster from the late 60′s.

These covers tickle my inner Old School Trekkie Fanboy heart.

Man, oh man, these covers just keep getting better. That artwork for What Judgments Come is stunning — nice to see the Sagittarius in action.

I can hardly wait to see the art for Storming Heaven.

A Daedalus on a cover might just be enough to get me reading Star Trek novels again.

I love these. I see you put the shuttle in there from “Star Trek: New Voyages” episode 1 “In Harm’s Way.” It’s also nice to see your Ptolemy-class and Daedalus-class meshes making appearances on the book covers. (I see the Ptolemy-class has the same markings it did in “Come What May.”)

Those are some really great compositions and they remind me of old movie posters also. :D

The covers for the Vanguard series really help set the mood before diving into the grand text adventures that await beneath! Always super sexy!

If anyone hasn’t had a chance to read these books, I highly recommend them! Doug’s art starts you off the right way and all the writers have captured that classic Trek feel that’ll keep ya commin’ back for more.

Any chances we might see some orthos of the Sagittarius?

I’m so looking forward to the new Vanguard collection. It’s perhaps my favourite Trek novel series, and as Matt says, the covers set the scene perfectly.

A colleague of mine was bemoaning the lack of a Trek series that dealt with non-Starfleet characters, so I passed one my Vanguard books (Quinn and Pennington will be right up his street).

I can second Matt, if you haven’t tried them yet, they’re a real treat, particularly for TOS fans, and the covers set the scene perfectly.

Oh, one more thing — just out of curiosity, what’s the name of the tugboat ship in the middle? I can make out “USS Alsomething”…

It’s so cool those old Franz Joseph have finally been allowed on an official CBS/Paramount product…it’s probably just a coincidence, but those cargo module clusters in the background resemble the heighliners from the David Lynch version of Dune.

If the artist is adhering to the Technical Manual, then the Ptolemy-class starship is named Al-Rashid.

Al-Rashid could be named after a Arabian Peninsula dynasty, or a caliph of Baghdad. Al Rashid is, also, one of the names for Allah.

Yes, in the novel Articles of the Federation.

Doug, those covers are absolutely gorgeous! Thank you so much for sharing this artwork with us! It is so mega-cool that you were able to use the Tech Manual transport/tug and cargo containers.

A great piece of work, Doug. Really creates the impression of a major port of call which never slows down.

I seriously love the art. I wish I could do masterpieces as those. Props to the artists.

I’m psyched to see Franz Joseph’s ships along side Vanguard. He’s a big reason I drew and designed starships when I was a kid (and why I continue doing so today).

Can we get more renderings and possible deck-layouts for the Archer-class? I absolutely love that little ship.
You’ve helped Vanguard come alive so much more with your renderings.

I’d gladly pay $30 before taxes tomorrow for a Vanguard Tech-Ops Manual/Strategic-Tactical Briefing volume…conditional on Doug, Masao and Rick being hired to illustrate and co-write…

Wow! Seeing those Franz Joseph designs in beautiful action-packed full color sends a tingle directly to the nerd-center of my brain! Beautiful work! That is Star Trek to me!

What is amazing to me is that the Franz Joseph designs are still popular over thirty-five years after they were first introduced. I think their popularity is partly attributable to their simplicity. They work well within the Star Trek universe, and are very attractive. I think the models can be improved, and I have seen some excellent attempts by some, including Masao, to improve upon the designs.

Great scene. Like how you are using these classic ships. I have read the first three Vanguard novels and enjoyed. Just starting the fourth. Glad this series is continuing and although behind in my reading, looks like there’s alot to look forward too here.

Very glad to see ships on the covers of the novels. A bit jealous too, because back when Keith was doing the covers, I really wanted to be doing some then too and wanted to do ships – this was before I ever used Lightwave and Photoshop – I was figuring to use the shooting models.

Really looking forward to see just how far you’ll take these great ships and so glad the dream is very much alive thanks to you.
