(Left) Artifacts from the day to day making of a classic television series. From the wall of Bob Blackman’s wardrobe department.
(Below) Even sideburns were required to be spit and polish on board the good ship Enterprise. This “Side -Burn Bible” was taped to the wall of the TNG makeup trailer.

This would make da Vinci proud!
Good lord, man. Even the US Military isn’t that anal retentive about sideburns.
I like the cheat sheet for the uniforms and rank. Of course, as fans, most of us had to pretty much figure that our on our own watching the show.
I had always wondered if those sideburns were real during TNG! Do you know if they did the same for they crew in TOS? I imagine then that burns cut that way wouldn’t look so different from the styles of the day.
I always thought the single black pip was a interesting way to signify an NCO. I liked that they revised that during DS9 and gave the NCOs a pip that helped signify their rank better.
That sideburn bible is great, maybe I should take a printout to my next barber shop visit…. just kidding.
Cheers

I haven’t seen that rank chart before, thanks. Going by the crossed-out data, the rank chart must have been up on the wall a loooong time. I’d say this is from early season six or later, since O’Brien is listed with only one dark pip, but before that he had been shown with two full pips.
Wait, there is O’Brien’s name next to the rank of Lieutenant as well, but his name isn’t crossed out! So now we know that both arrangements were quite intentional. This is great.
Just what I need, as it happens.
It is curious that Commodore is listed as a theoretical rank, but without a specified pip arrangement. Gold-framed with only one dot?
I missed commodores in the TNG era. They were always great go-to mischief-makers in the original series.
Maybe by the TNG era we never saw them because Starfleet had learnt its lesson and gave all the commodores time off duty to chat to a counselor?
So, how many of the actor’s “Starfleet Sideburns” were appliances and how many were their real sideburns trimmed to spec? Of course, Worf was exempt from this…as was Riker from season two forward. It’s amazing to see that so much thought went into even this aspect of the show.
Excellent proof that O’Brien was thought to be a lieutenant until they decided ‘chief’ indicates a warrant officer … I wonder why CMO Crusher never received that hollow pip
Also, the chart was apparently started in season two, since Crusher’s name was obviously added later.
The Side-Burn Bible? Isn’t that what Elvis was reading when he died?
Good to know. Now, to figure out how to utilize that canon info on a chimpy…
