Absolutely fantastic, especially the artwork which I’ve added to my wallpaper cycler.
I’m still a little confused about the shuttlepod bays though. If they’re still in the same place, how do the pods deploy? There doesn’t appear to be much clearance between the saucer and secondary hull…
I think a more proper shuttlebay has been added to the rear of the engineering section and the old pod bays are gone.
It’s nice to see your updated design is catching on, Doug. It’s not surprising, though. People expect the Enterprise to have an engineering section and now you’ve added one to this Enterprise. I think less people would have complained about it looking too much like the Akira-class if you’d been allowed to do that for the ship on the show.
And I agree with evil, the inspection pod/eva area in the back of the saucer would probably be reconfigured to become two aft shuttlebays. I would think that area would have to be internally reorganized anyway, so they could put in lifts and whatnot through the neck.
I always meant to ask: what date is this uprated version of the design supposed to come into service? I think the finale stated the ship was decommissioned in 2161, so maybe this a “what if” idea, but how many years of progress do you think it represents past the launch date of the ship?
I believe that Doug mentioned that this is what he would have liked to have seen as an upgrade that would have occured in the 5th season had Enterprise not prematurely been canceled.
I’m also in agreement with evil_genius_180. If the NX-01 had looked like this, or had been refitted during the series’ run, there would have been far less hemming-and-hawing over its design.
Doug, it is awesome that the conversion kit for your NX-01 upgrade is such a big hit, and seeing photos of a constructed model was very cool. When I saw them I couldn’t help but think, “now THAT’S the Enterprise!” Many hearty congratulations!
Beautiful – it´s a very special treat to see something you designed in virtual space suddenly come to live once again in a real model. It would be great if there´s also a 1/350 conversion.
Fantastic! I own the Art Asylum “toy” NX-01, so I never had any interest in buying the Polar Lights kit. But after seeing the wonderful refit designs, and finding that there’s a kit available to actually build it…I’ve changed my mind. It looks incredible! Hopefully the kit will be back in stock soon.
Always loved the NX design, but the refit sets the bar to a whole new level. She is breathtaking. Can’t wait for someone to do a kit for the 1/350th kit.{Round 2 are you listening?]
And that first sketch in there, with the catamaran hulls removed, would that be then the next refit? Done after a number of years, after further developments to the structural integrity fields and inertial dampeners?
If so, it would support my theory that the NX-01 eventually became the NCC-1701.
While its great to see something that was just made up for the license side of things taking a life of its own (which is very cool), I guess I am just in the minority that really dislikes the design. The various departments design work on Enterprise was never anything I had any problems with (in fact in that regard its one of my favorites).
…One thing the 1.5 Refit opens opportunities for is to allow for variants in the detachable engineering pod concept. This is something that could probably be done with any of the existing NX-01 meshes that have been made available for download – provided, of course, that the mesh designer hasn’t placed a bunch of bullshit restrictions and/or demands for their permission for *any* use and/or rediculous demands that all images using their meshes be cluttered with copyright notices instead of placed in a README where they belong in the first place.
More on topic tough, I do not see why someone wouldn’t build the refit. Most of the newer NX models though are not public meshes. It would be nice to see Deks over at SFM apply this to his NX.
I very much like this new kit. I’d love to see a 1/350 re-release, ’cause I have a ship to build!
I do want to bring back the shuttlebay question- I see the schematic and know the stern ‘port’, where we’d all expect a shuttlebay, is supposed to be the warp core ejection port. The existing shuttlebays were converted into traffic space for the neck, because it connects straight through them.
Did I hear someone mention that the shuttlebays could be at the stern of the saucer? That seems the best option, if only a schematic could back it up.
My own fix was to move them horizontally port and starboard beneath the saucer.
Damn that is a fine ship. I’ve never really given any thought to model building before, but this is one I am seriously considering picking up.
In the meantime, is there any ideas about the NX-refit’s specifications? Things like maximum speed, tactical loadout, sensor capabilities, crew count and the like.
I wonder how long it will be before someone (other than Doug) produces a CG model of the refit. I’ve seen many fine fan made CG models out there, would be a fun little project to build this extension too!
…When you consider that the Refit never got a chance to appear on the show, this might be a case where it’s the modeler’s own choice as to what Aztecing they should create and apply. That is, unless Doug created his mesh with “official” Aztecs.
…Speaking of which…Doug? Can you provide a six-view – left, right, front, back, top *and* bottom – at a seriously large resolution? Something big and detailed enough so that anyone wanting to build this upgrade and/or gen up their own mesh can have an “official” reference?
So how do I modify my NX-01 refit MSD to cover the refit? Does it have a shuttlebay or still have the dropdown system, etc.? Is there already a cross section made?
I was THIS close to buying the Polar Lights model last night, but I don’t have the skills to make it look as good as I would want it to be. And the fact that the add-on is twice as much as the model itself. Maybe someone could just sell already completed ones for people like me.
…A bit of advice I’ve given to modelers who claim that their skills “aren’t up to snuff” over the years: all that sort of talk results in is a self-bruised ego and a box full of parts gathering dust in a closet. The real joy of modeling isn’t so much assembling a kit so that it 110% matches the original source, but that it matches what -you- *believe* the original source looks like, and if possible go a bit beyond that accuracy. The key is to remember to have *F*U*N* assembling the kit, and if the finished result doesn’t match the original source down to the same paint shades and micrometer’s worth of greeblie, then you should never let that distract from the fun you had assembling the kit in the first place. Even the most experienced modelers with shelves full of finished kits and trophies still come across instances where they see someone else’s attempts at the same kit they did, marveled at their results, and went “you know, maybe next time I’ll give dry pastels *and* the PE detail set a try…”
Do yourself a favor: never let any perception of “lack of skills” keep you from giving any affordable kit a shot. You’ll just be denying yourself a few extra hours of fun with the hobby of modeling, and again, so fracking what if it’s not a Greg Jein reproduction of something he’d designed and built for a film? All that matters is that *you* did it, and *you* had -fun- doing it!
I just bought one of these refit kits for the NX-01, and got one of the 1/1000 NX-01 kits. Looking forward to building her up right. Got great reference pics now from Doug’s fabulous blog site.

Curses! Already out of stock! I’ll keep watching! This is way too cool, Doug!

I like that they show it at new angles…really shows her off.
Again, “Now that is a Starship”.
The modelers did a very nice job.
Add me to the list of people who love this design even more now that we can see a physical model of it.
A starship, indeed.
About the only thing missing is the, “What can she do?” data.
Building the kit now, but here’s a crazy question. did the Enterprise update the primary hull deflector dish to Columbia’s version?

At the modeler’s magic website, I saw a sketch also of your early take on the NX-01. Well someone flashed that concept out too:

Not to be confused with the Declaration class ringship Mark did.

I was wondering if someone had done a model from that sketch. I like the explanation they provided. I could definitely see it as a bridge between the NX-01.5 and the NCC-1701:

Maybe this attitude is why no one has released anything.
…Sorry, but that “Straw Man” argument never worked when it was first thrown out, and even less today.
[shakes head in utter disgust]
whatever man, whining about free stuff. . . . . us modelers are not her to pander to your needs or demands.

Doug,
I want to build a U-87.
How can I get the plans to build one?
Just realized something: there’s aztec decal kits for the NX-01, but not for the refit kit. Does it require them?
…When you consider that the Refit never got a chance to appear on the show, this might be a case where it’s the modeler’s own choice as to what Aztecing they should create and apply. That is, unless Doug created his mesh with “official” Aztecs.

I just did a very important post for the star trek family…
12th January posting ‘www.spacetravel21stcentury.blogspot.com/
Live long and prosper.

this is just my idea for the shuttlebay question.

Nice take. Two exits, rather than one.
Why is the front dorsal part of the saucer in red? Is that supposed to be a part of the hangar space, or just a visual gaffe?

I serioulsy hope this is included in the next Enterprise Romulan War novel.
And you should do the illustration for the book cover too of course!!
