What is it?!
People ask me if I get to sketch anymore. They figure that with the computer, that’s where you stay. Every once in a while it pays to make the brain to hand connection. These are quick sketches I made for Gary Hutzel. When New Caprica becomes a Cylon concentration camp, Gary wanted Cylon watchtowers. We ended up using number three. Happy Snaps – Defiant Bridge
Seems like yesterday.
Here are a bunch of happy snaps of the Defiant bridge I thought no one would be interested in. Something tells me I’m wrong. If I remember correctly, I shot these as reference for the DS9 Tech manual. Since there really isn’t that much out there on DS9, I finally decided to stop putting these away. In truth they have a nice candid quality to them.
Steth’s Ship
Not only was this ship capable of jumping from one star to another, but apparently from one television show to another.
The Jörg report – This ship first appeared as Steth’s experimental coaxial drive ship in the episode “Vis a vis”. It is apparently of Benthan origin. The model was later re-used in “Drive” where one ship of this type took part in the Antarian trans-stellar rally. It was re-used later that season to appear as a Quarra orbital ship in “Workforce I+II”. The coolest re-use however, appeared in Firefly, where it was seen in the episode “War stories”, orbiting Niska’s space station together with some other ships lifted from Voyager.
Ledosian Patrol Ship
Bits and pieces. The Ledosian vesse destined to live on as kludge fodder. Waste not want not.
The Jörg report – The Ledosian patrol ship from “Natural law” was only seen in “Natural law”, first docked at the Ledosian space station and later when it tries to scare away Voyager. What makes this ship special is the fact that it’s basically the Akritiri patrol ship from “The chute” slipped into a larger hull. It is an odd variant because the CGI of the Akritirian vessel was combined with a custom hull in a way that only the forked forward end is sticking out. The Akritirian vessel is one of the most often re-used starship in all of Star Trek. It appeared, in various modifications, 7 times on Voyager and twice on Enterprise. Here’s an article about the re-uses of the ship, that will also clarify, how the Akritirian ship was turned into the Ledosian vessel, which Bernd and I wrote some years ago: http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/articles/akritirian.htm

SOTL Coffee Book Cover
I delivered the blueprints for the NX-01 fifth season refit to Pierre Drolet about two weeks ago, and Pierre has delivered back a heapin’ helpin’ of sexytime .
The NX-01 Enterprise finally gets her wings, and now looks like a full fledged starship. Legendary Mike Okuda is up next, and will be delivering a fitting fleet-style graphic treatment for the updated ship, and I’m considering including diagrams and tech. The NX-01 refit is ahead of schedule for it’s debut in the 2011 SOTL calendar. I’ve spent all weekend lining up shots, and baby it’s a whole new dynamic. Good times.

Vulcan Native Dress
Shi’Kahr, We Have a Problem.
While on the subject of Vulcan’s and Vulcan ships, here is the ill-fated Tal’Kir from “Future Tense”. An extraordinary attention to detail was lavished on this aftermath version of the Vulcan command ship. Even burned and pitted, she’s beautiful.

Another thing for me to be thankful to this blog for is rehooking me up with my old friend Steve Neil.
Steve has done it all… makeup artist, CG artist, physical model builder, and RC submarine madman. The above clips from Steve are two of the coolest things I have ever seen. Steve took the Polar lights 1\350 Enterprise-A kit, and converted it to an RC submarine http://www.sneillfx.com/page16. You’ll be mesmerized. Next is Steve’s astonishing Moebius http://www.sneillfx.com/page12 RC Seaview from “Voyage To The Bottom of the Sea” – WOW! The Seaview looks amazingly at home running submerged!
Be sure and check out the entirety of Steve’ site! It’s a great Sunday afternoon, chock full of fascinating stuff from the mind of Steve Neil! Plus a lot of behind the scenes tidbits I know you guys love! Of particular amusement: the section entitled “Submarine Building For Dumbasses”. www.sneillfx.com
Vulcan D’Vahl Type Fighter
(Above) The Vulcan D’Vahl class ship waxes nostalgic for “Destination Moon”.
The D’Vahl exhibited a rotund penquiny quality fused with the Vulcan lander from “First Contact”, and Chesley Bonnestell’s moonship from DM. Most notably seen in “Carbon Creek”. The model was later re-used in “Storm front II” where it appeared as one of the welcoming ships in orbit of Earth and in “Kir’shara” and “Awakening”.

Starfleet Uniform Evolution
Starfleet uniform evolution is at the pinnacle of my Trek fascination curve, and I absolutely loved getting a chance to illustrate it for the Trek Encyclopedia. Having the wardrobe department right next store, and having carte blanche, made the drawing even more fun and exciting.
