A Boy and his Starship

doug_n_ent_2

Me and my NX model built especially for me by The FX Company in Ocala, Florida. Pic snapped last night by Mike Okuda.

Dorth and I were lucky enough to partake in our favorite pizza last night with our favorite peeps, Mike and Denise, at Little Tony’s Bella Vista in beautiful downtown Burbank. Some of you know that Little Tony’s was Matt Jefferies favorite Italian joint in the Valley (Didja’ know that whenever you saw the crew on “Enterprise” having pizza, it was always from Little Tony’s?). Afterwards Mike and Nezee dropped over for desert, say hi to Beaky Boy, and to snap this photic sonar reflection of me and the FX Company’s NX model (http://thefxcompany.com/index.html). They did a stunningly great job. The paint is spectacular. I’ll be sure to run some shots of it in the near future.

(Below) Gooch just sent me this shot he took yesterday. That’s mi maestro, makeup master Dick Smith who stopped by for a visit. Since Dick Smith gave me my start in the business, he’s a sort of grandfather to the NX. What a thrill. If you aren’t familiar with Dick Smith, discover what you have been missing here -  http://drexfiles.wordpress.com/2009/06/21/dick-smith-retrospect/

You have every reason to be proud, and happy that you have room on your dining room table after the cleanup expedition, eh? :)

That’s quite possibly the most beautiful that ship has ever looked!

    Forget the last question.
I’ve already gone to The FX Company site.
    Congratulation for the great design.

Oh my… absolutely stunning. I would almost seriously consider robbing a bank or selling a kidney for enough cash to purchase one for my dining table. The paint job and lighting is spectacular! :D

The NX rapidly became my favourite ship.
    This image absolutely illustrates why!
Thanks for sharing your baby Doug.

That’s a beautiful build! I take it that is a Polar Lights 1/350?

    Thanks for sharing Doug.

Hi Richard! That’s right, Polar Lights. I worked with them on that kit. It’s a fantastic job. It may be the most accurate Enterprise model ever produced. That’s saying a lot, considering the amount of detail the NX carries.

Beautiful!! Love the lighting scheme they built for the model and the custom display stand is very nicely done!

I have a picture of the NX-01 that you did up for the blog as my background on my computer monitors at work. Everytime someone walks by, I’m constantly getting compliments on how cool they think it looks. A testament to the great work that you did with this design! I can only imagine what it must be like to see it in physical form, even at 1/350th scale. :)

Man…now I want some pizza! I’m going to have to check Little Tony’s out the next time I’m in LA!

That model is so gorgeous; must start saving!

The FX Company website says that the ships’ functions are controlled by 6 mini-switches; what are those functions? I’m assuming the lighting grid (which is amazing, by the way) is one of them.

That first pic, to me, seems to make an excellent case for going back to using models on TV as the NX looks better there than I ever saw it on screen!

Oh! Yes she is beautiful and she is your baby but over these and so many ships wich ships is our all time favourite and my compliment to the builder of the model

Remarkable picture. I never realized that the NX-01 in 1:350 is that big.

    Fantastic! A great job!

Really looking forward for some detail shots of that model. Looks very, very impressive even that small.

I miss STAR TREK ENTERPRISE right now…

I was watching it in order on Syfy this summer, but it just disappeared. I have season 2 disks 5,6 and 7 from Netflix right now. :D

That’s a beautiful model. And love how she’s sitting on top of the NX Display Table as if a hologram.

I live in Ocala and wish I could get on with this company. They do great work! :D

  17. October 25, 2009 at 3:49 pm

My jaw is on the floor…wow!

The model looks like it could go warp-5! :D

Wow, you are really living the life, Doug Drexler. Your wife lets you keep awesome starships on the dining room table, you have delicious pizza, and you have Dick Smith dropping by just to say “hi”. Charmed! Charmed, I tell you!

I also had occasion to think about Mr. Smith and his amazing work today, as I listened to an mp3 of Christopher Lee reading William Peter Blatty’s “The Exorcist”. That is all kinds of spooky, even when you’re just going to the grocery store.

Well, it looks like I will have to get out the modelling stuff again. There is no way on God’s green Earth that I could convince my wife that I need to spend $1,200.00 on a starship model.

Anyway, I wanted to build one of these when it came out. It’s grown on my over the years. I just hope I can find one that doesn’t break the bank.

I’m recalling the opening scene from “Broken Bow” and I can almost imagine Doug saying the same line. You designed a hell of a ship Doug.

Words don’t do it justice… pictures certainly come close though.

Thanks for sharing, Doug. Looks like I may have to start saving! LOL.

Now you don’t need a Christmas tree! Speaking of which, every year ours is decorated with the Hallmark “Star Trek” (and in the spirit of the season, one or two “Star Wars”) ornaments.

  22. October 26, 2009 at 12:18 pm

I had a TOS Enterprise from The FX Company which was phenomenal. Lights and sound effects, but the best part was a removable shuttle bay door which revealed a fully lit and detailed shuttle bay. It was INCREDIBLE. I only parted with it out of necessity.

I’ve seen their build-up of the Polar Lights monster TOS Movie Enterprise and it is too awesome for words. One day, when I win the lottery, I’m going after that. It’s a truly breathtaking piece.

Point being, I’m glad you were able to get your hands on one of their products. They truly are beautiful works.

Very, very cool model. The more “metallic” look of this presentation gives it a feel of being from a different era from any of the three familiar timeframes: TOS, TMP-STVII, and TNG-VOY… This “shinier” NX-01 is intriguing. It might have won over a few of the grumps. I can’t help but guess it’s very gratifying to see such tangible craftmanship applied to something you conceptualized and designed.

I am going to blackmail my boss into a raise so I can have one of those. Holy Moley!

It looks like they’ve put as much heart and soul into building that beauty as you did designing it!

If it isn’t too much an imposition, could you please post a photo of the keel?

    Thanks

Doug, that’s a sweet starship ride. You have good reason to smile. Bravo! And what a great tribute to you. Well-deserved! :)

Side note: I didn’t know PL put out such a large NX kit. Way-cool. :)

Oh, BTW, I have the Hallmark silver desktop NX ornament, and the Art Asylum NX both about 3-4 feet away from me (on different side of the room). You know how I love your NX, eh. ;)

Oh my Lord, you are a lucky man, sir. She’s a beautiful ship, and that’s one beautiful looking model. What I wouldn’t give to have my own ship design produced in physical form haha

I recently bought this Polar Lights model in the UK which was really hard and expensive to get hold of because they hadnt been produced since 2005. Im currently preparing all the aztecing masking to spray and ive been working on all the LED circuitry from scratch. Its such an amazing kit which crazy levels of detail. I just hope to do it justice and produce something similar to FX’s level of quality.
