Looks like the Colonel is a somewhat insecure man. I wonder how long it’ll be before he realises something’s up? And will Steve still have a career left when he does?
One thing I find a bit odd is the language used by the Chinese characters. “Leader will decide all! Leader comes now!” and “…imperialist yankee face…”
It seems a bit disrespectful to me because surely they could speak better english and makes me wonder if Mr. Caniff is playing to his audience a bit.
I don’t know exactly when this storyline ran, but it was possibly during or shortly after the war, in which case being “disrespectful” to the enemy would be par for the course.
Yep. I have a war-era (Golden Age) Captain America comic, with a flash-out in the lower right corner for a game inside called “Slap The Jap!” The flash-out was a pic of a buck-toothed yellow-skinned Japanese officer reeling back to the side as a white hand was slapping him across the face.
So yeah, it took a long time for the Asian enemy stigma to wear off in the USA, eh. Still hasn’t for some.
This was the 50s barrie, Asians were all very stereotypically represented. That’s what fumed Bruce Lee so much. Mickey Rooney playing the Asian neighbor to such a stereotype for one.
It seems that Col. Index needs to learn to get past his jealousy and listen to the intelligent and honest Major Canyon! Just wait until he learns that they’re tunneling right under his nose!
Mrs. Index seems to be fairly intelligent, maybe she’ll find a way to let someone know where she’s at.
I have a hard time sometimes seeing how blacks and asians were portrayed and viewed in the 50’s and before…I’m just glad that it has improved greatly. Notice that I didn’t say it’s all good now, but improved.
This appeared on September 30th, 1951. Milton was an expert on Asia, with a huge library devoted to the region…remember, his previous strip was TERRY AND THE PIRATES which took place in Asia and ran for 12 years.
deg…part of my background is as a comic artist and illustrator…and while I never really studied Milt’s work in depth (or Wally Wood, or Frazetta, Ditko, Kirby, Elder, Manning, etc. etc.) I paid attention to what he (and they, and many others that I love) were doing in their work. It just gets absorbed.
I pretty much switched to film in 1980 and stopped doing much art…except where it related to the films I was working on at the time.
ANYWAY, in 2005 I got interested in the Steve Canyon TV series (I had a vhs copy of the unaired version of the pilot that REALLY intrigued me) and I started researching the show. Noticing my obsession, I was asked to write an article for a magazine about the series by a friend (Brad Linaweaver)…so to get permission I called a publisher that was actively reprinting Milton’s work and asked them to put me in touch with his estate.
One email and one phone call later I was on the phone with Harry Guyton, Milton’s nephew and executor of his estate, and one plane ride later I was sitting in Harry’s living room discussing the TV Series…and the possibility of resurrecting it. You see, Harry had been actively trying to figure out what happened to the series over the years when I contacted him. Serendipity!
I had already figured out where most of the episodes were AND that the ownership of the series had reverted to Milton in the mid 1960’s…and I suggested that Harry rerelease the show on DVD…at which point he suggested that I handle it all and that we become partners.
Sorry this has been so long-winded but…I suppose I could have said, quite simply…
Gibbon back, he says, (chimpy chortle)… a man I’d easily share a fun-vine and banana with, eh!
Wowsers John, that’s quite a story/resume you gots there, eh! I of course have seen many of the films you have worked on. Fun times career there indeed! You and me, we share a lot of the same interests, basically sci-fi, aviation, space, comic-book, etc. geek-in-arms.
And being a “blue” personality, as my wife Christina (C) tells me I am, being eternally curious, esp. about other folks, esp. friends, “I need information” is my motto, so I would have been disappointed if you had just answered, “I emailed them.”
So thanks for that and for the links about you! Excellent art-work there, dude! Love the WW and SC inked esp. Very nice all, eh.
Hey, you may not know, I’m a CG model builder and painter, freelance for hire. Folks seem to feel I’m pretty talented. So if you ever need any help for hire for any projects, please feel free to look at my website and demo-reel, and give me a jimgle (or email) if you need any help. I’m very laid-backed and easy to get along and work with, and completely good service orientated, eh.
And dea, with the rim-shot, you. Banana and fun-vine for you too, Sweetie!
Thanks again for the multi-level comprehensive reply, John! Now I won’t have to be blue being a blue, eh. Yellow much better, as in banana yellow (hands John a nice ripe ‘naner).
Whew…homework until 4:00 am and then more homework tonight kept me from getting my SC fix!
Yep, some serious insecurities on the Colonel’s part there! Poor Steve seems to be the current lightning rod for those these days. It’ll be interesting to see if his anger/jealousy keeps him from suspecting something’s up with the people working in his house or if we’ll see the return of the hero once called Socker!
Ya know, I was thinkin’ it, but didn’t want to sound ungrateful for the DT we ben gettin, eh? I decided to watch more SC, since I haven’t quite finished the show yet….
I just finished me “Operation Nose Wheel”, man what a nail biter! That Steve sure knows how to keep his cool and accept and assess the situation. That’s some ice cool Colonel!!
Yeah, take that you imperialist yankee wench!
They’re diggin’ a tunnel right under the Index’s house and no-one noticed?! Not the sharpest tools in the ol’ tool-box, eh.
