Waste not, want not. The Nausican begat the Xindi, and that begat something expensive down the line when we really needed it.
Benjamin Franklin must have been watching Star Trek when he said… ” Beware of little expenses: a small leak will sink a great ship.” If we had a good design that was rarely seen, it wasn’t unusual to “repurpose”. http://drexfiles.wordpress.com/2009/07/25/deja-vu-all-over-again/
Todays subject is the Xindi repurpose of a Nausican design. Here now with some background is Professor Jörg -
” The ship was seen, as a Nausicaan raider, in “Fortunate Son”. The model appeared again, completely unchanged, as a science vessel of an unnamed species that attacks Enterprise in “Bound”. The model was modified and Xindi-fied to appear as a Xindi-Insectoid patrol ship in “Stratagem” and “Azati Prime”. In the first episode, it was only part of the simulation seen through the simulation ship’s window. In “Azati Prime” it was seen for real as an underwater craft used by the Xindi-Insectoids.” – Jörg

Are those little deflector dishes I see at the front?
Hmm, I just remembered, I have an image from PE’s ill fated Star Trek Online of this ship, not sure who did the concept art mind.

Bah, messed up the code, ahh well
Is that the Seaview I see back there… ooot?
Great stuff, thanks guys!

Small, compact and powerful. A perfect raider.
What was the “something expensive” that came later?
Definitely looks alien though, very nicely done! I don’t suppose you have anything for the Coridan ship eh there Mr. Doug, Doug? (not easy typing one handed but it looks ok)

Another favorite design from Enterprise (although I don’t think it would have been necessary to re-use it for the Xindi). Thanks a lot for posting these, they were close to the top of the list!!!
. . . and thank you Bernd, for your most excellent website Ex Astris Scientia! I often spend hours reading the articles there and find them most informative. ~Mark~
I really like the flying wing look it has onscreen. I’d like to know what was meant with the “something expensive down the line” comment, as Barrie asked. Is that a post coming up soon?
Nice weathering effect on this model. I imagine this is a transatmospheric raider.
Just a thought..
I had watched all the Enterprise Eps as they premiered..Yes sometimes is was painful…nah.
But i really hadent noticed until this blog how “many” ship designs used were cut and pasted into many episodes as a tellerite this, and then a nausiican that.
maybe this is the “reality” of so much “virtuality” used for the production of ehat are mainly stories…even though, yes this is the blog/community of the visualists who do ans “should” take pride in their work/efforts.:)
But my thought is of our obssesive youth and how we “ah ha!D” at the tholian ship with nacelles that now was flown by hippies in TOS, or how those crafty romulans MUST have had a side deal with the Klingon ship makers by season 3.:)
is more more? is technology really freeing us up to better ourselves as humans( troy to sam clemens) seems a trek parrable is in the proof of the production 40 years later.
i really had no idea, it went right past my “trained” but less “needy” eyeballs how many designs got reused as this blog has revealed. Is this a story of focus, or wisdom, of the viewer or of the maker(s)
maybe it does shed some light as well, on the easiness that the new ones accepted the nu-jj prise design, while “we” of such special “old ways” found obsession over the half dozen designs of a ST TMP.?
ignore the post if you think its ramble, think about it broadly if you find some value..
i found all these ships , the abunance, and the limits ….. “facinating.”

Another thing for your eyeballs to ponder; the studio backlot at Warner Bros. that has all the houses from all those 60’s shows, still intact but refreshed occasionally for new productions. Suffice it to say there’s some internet trivia sites who can provide you with more information than you require on that topic. Really messed with me a bit that Major Nelson’s house is still around (complete with Jeannie’s bottle inside)
I think the design worked really well underwater as a Xindi vessel. I’m also curious what the more expensive thing this begat down the line was.
This ship reminds me of a Voyager concept a lot! Any chance that one was part of the concepting process as well?
