BSG Composer Bear McCreary with Katee Sackhoff “All Along The Watchtower” Live

This just in from John Pearse:

Doug, wasn’t sure where to post this. The BSG fans are bound to enjoy these recordings of Bear McCreary’s June concert, also featuring Katie Sackhoff on the piano. The rendition of All Along the Watchtower rocks so much. :D

Shot at the Grand Performances Series in Downtown Los Angeles.

Note from Bear McCreary “Kara Thrace herself, Katee Sackhoff, joined me on stage at the grand piano to play Kara Remembers I played the left hand part, and she plucked out the Final Four Theme, just as she did in the climax of Someone to Watch Over Me. Once we had the Final Four Theme going on the piano, the band snuck in, building to Heeding the Call and finally All Along the Watchtower.

    **sigh**

How I miss this show already. And what a frakking TRAVESTY that not one single member of this talented ensemble got a nod from Emmy. Ridiculous!

    Thanks for posting this.

Thanks! So cool. I see Gaeta’s Lament and Lords of Kobol in there too.. so very, very cool. Another favorite of mine is definitely Something Dark is Coming:

I second the *sigh* at this adventure being over. From the bleak gritty scifi to the high concept storytelling near the end, it was one heck of a ride.

Oh. When is “The Plan” supposed to air?

Bear McCreary rules, simple as that. His music is a huge part of why I like BSG, and he also finds the time to write a mind-bogglingly detailed blog about it. I discovered it only recently and started going through some of the older posts with my notebook on top of the piano, but there’s still so much to go through. (However, I can already manage pretty good piano renditions of some of the main themes, like the Graystone Theme, the Tauron Theme or the Roslin and Adama Theme.) Once the viewer becomes familiar with the more subtle thematic elements of BSG music, listening to the way they work together in actual episodes adds a lot to the experience.

Yeah, that was pretty cool, eh. Always loved the music from BSG. Not crazy about the single tied off camera, as I would have liked to have been “closer,” but hey, better than nothing, eh.

    Thanks John and Doug! :)

    So say we all,

Worth checking out the “related links”– I listened to “Prelude to War” live, and “Roslin and Adama”, and “Precipice”, and “Fight Night”, and on and on. Damn, do I wish I’d been there. Nothing makes the morning commute go faster than Bear McCreary and the BSG orchestral suite in the CD player! Thanks for the link!

Proof of Bob Dylans’ genius is that his music is being reinterpreted all the time, though I think most people prefer the Jimi Hendrix version to the original.

Who was the vocalist in this performance?

Also, I’d like to add my *sigh* to all of the others. BSG was a great show!

The vocals ought to be Brendan McCreary, right?

Yep, he’s credited at the end of Gaeta’s Lament. I’m saving “Wander my Friends” til I can sit in a dark room and give it my full attention. I love that piece, as well as the similar “Reuniting the Fleets”. Feels like it’s tapping into some long forgotten memory.

How utterly delightful! BSG is the only show to compete with my affections for DS9, and Katee Sackhoff the only actress to compete with my affections for Jolene Blalock! ;)

Thanks for sharing the link, John. I am enjoying hearing the music as I watch the whole thing for the first time. I listened to “Wander My Friends” just now and love it, too.

Bear McCreary’s work for BSG is the most interesting thing I’ve heard in scoring for TV/Film in years. Maybe a decade or two.
With his use of themes and instruments, he brings a voice to BSG that lets you know, ‘Oh, yeah, I’m watching BSG’ (and not any other show). This is a tribute to the producers who allowed him to interesting and memorable.

His work for Caprica is already out, Season 4 (2 cd set!) drops 28 Jul, and hos work for the two features will be out later 2009.

So very, very awesome!! Thanks for the heads up on the Season 4 soundtrack, AdmNaismith! I’ve been waiting and wondering when that was going to come out.

Bear is a musical genius. His scores for BSG were so unique as to create a musical character that was just as much a part of the tapestry that made this such a wonderful series.

BTW, Season 4.5 will be out on DVD this Tuesday along with the complete series box sets in both standard DVD and Blu-ray.

Those interested might also want to check out Christopher Franke’s work on B5. His musical scores, especially the variations on the opening title theme, were really good.

Getting back to the video in question:

    Damn.

    Just…damn.

    Thanks for this.
