God Speed Walter Cronkite

In a stroke of  sad irony… Walter Cronkite, the face of the space program for so many of us, died today at the age of 92. As reported by the Chicago Tribune -

NEW YORK (AP) — Walter Cronkite, the premier TV anchorman of the networks’ golden age who reported a tumultuous time with reassuring authority and came to be called “the most trusted man in America,” died Friday. He was 92. Cronkite’s longtime chief of staff, Marlene Adler, said Cronkite died at 7:42 p.m. at his Manhattan home surrounded by family. She said the cause of death was cerebral vascular disease.

A  true journalist on television. How times have changed.

Thank you Walter Cronkite. We love you more than we can possibly say.

So many of us stayed up late and watched Walter Cronkite that night that summer as those flickering images of black and white came across our “new” big screen tvs….

One of the the best uses of Television that night, and he was central to it for most of us. The animations.. the cuts to live events, and finally those shadows from the moon.

Murrow, Cronkite, Reynolds, Jennings and others..somehow we cant lose what they did with this “new” world of slef reflecting blogs and mirrors.

Sometimes it takes another to put the truth into you. Thats journalism, and thats what they (he) did.

One of my favorite Cronkite quotes is “I can’t imagine a person becoming a success who doesn’t give this game of life everything he’s got.” Seems as though he did a good job of following his own advice.

Thank you Walter for everything. Thank you for being that trusted man for us all. You will be missed.

Walter Cronkite was one of the few journalists you could really trust. There was no controversy, no politicalism, no flash; he told it like it was and down the middle. Modern journalists really need to learn from his example.

One of the roles I remember best that wasn’t on TV News, but it was him voicing Captain Neweyes in A Dinosaur’s Story. It it was a really heartfelt role that I will never forget.

    He was a real legend.

“And that’s the way it is.” Good-night.

A reporter of the news instead of an opinion giver, family member to so many of us, and holding his breath with us all, he made that profound moment in 1969 more human.

    You will be missed.

RIP sir, condolences to family, friends and fans.

it’s quite fitting 40 years on for him to say farewell

    maria,
just a note…and a thought your comment brings up.

Walter famously DID give his opinion on a newscast.. he suggested -directly to america- that we could not win in vietnam, and the best we could get was a long stalemate.

Opinions arent the issue:) its why they are given:) Cronkite gave his because as best I can tell he felt it was his MORAL responsabilty too….. I assume he decided it was to be told for lives and country…it actually may have cost him money:)

Opinions today , ala FOX NEWS hosts, BLOGGERs, fashionistas, and so many more are only motivated to be given for money and personal pleasure. They are “presented” as newscasts, but are entertainemnt– even daily show viewers are at time lost on this difference.:)- ive had too many online altercations with those who believe the dialy show is the best newscast on tv:)

This is the switch in what journalism has become that makes what walters career was about seem so alien to those born after he retired from the newscasts.

Opinions of the individual matter . but as they have become increasingly only designed to be fodder for entertainment and not civic discourse, and tied directly to the profits that entertainament culture offers… we have began as a group to lose site of the value of an individuals opinion, and are left mostly with doubt to why any opinion, other than ours,or one we agree already with, has any value.

BTW– since this is a trek crowd, i recently found out about the ISLAND, the 1962 last book from Huxley…counter to his more famous BRAVE NEW WORLD… havent read it yet, but have read a few online wiki- and reviews….

seem’s to me, there MUST have been a copy of this book lying around while Mr. Roddenbery was writing up TV ideas in 1963-4;) Also seems the Venus Project must have found alot from it as well…. its got many pre 1970 peyote power and post 1970 new agey things within it from what ther reviews state, but there does seem to be alot of Roddentrek in there,,,,

somthing for the 23rd century old fanboyz to look at if interested…i dont think a teleplay was ever made from the Island?….

    Sad day.

Even though I didn’t know much of his work as I wasn’t born until 84 and in England, I remember him on all the NASA archive footage used so many times.

    =(
