from the earth to the moon is simply one of the best series ever. with all these diffrent viewpoints (astros, wives, technicians, journos, constructiors etc) and the beautiful narrated histroy.
Finally got it on DVD last year, after renting it way too many times. The shows about the LEM, the Genesis Rock, and the wives are really ouustanding, and I’m always in the mood for the Al Bean/Apollo12 ep (don’t point the camera at the SUN!
I think maybe the last episode is the only weak one in the batch. Lotsa cool little stuff to look for too; in a long shot of the VAB in the Apollo 7 episode, they just used a still photo, then animated a bit of coastal water to give the picture some life.
12 hours costing something like 65 mil … a bargain (probably even at twice the price.)
I can’t believe this is over ten years old! (I can’t believe that DS9 has been gone for ten years either.)
IMHO the only weak ep. was the Apollo 13 episode. It felt like kind of a place-holder. (“Go watch the movie, kids.”) Which was too bad, because Tim Daley was an awesome Lovell. And Fred Haise was “the man they call Jayyyyyyne!” (It cracks me up that they almost always cast astronauts as Really Tall Guys.)
Kevin: I was in Flagstaff AZ this last week and they had a brochure about all of the Apollo related stuff there was in Northern AZ, notably the connection with Harrison Schmitt and Flagstaff. I immediately thought of the last episode (even more than the Rocks episode). It brings a tear to my eye every time. Plus “Gene Cernan” showed up in Insurrection!
I just saw this episode on Monday! So awesome!! I want to go to the moon! There have been clear nights where I have taken the opportunity to just look at the moon. It takes my breath away to see the craters and how majestic it is. Not to long ago, my 3 year old and I saw the moon through a telescope in our backyard and it was awe-inspiring.
I’ll be starting on this series next week. It got bumped for “The Thing”. I didn’t read all the way through the comments because of some opinions on the series…I’ll wait until I’ve seen it myself. The video was great though, and I watched part 2 on Youtube.
Look at the moon whenver I can see it. I love seeing it full when it’s big and the craters can be seen! I recently moved down to Phoenix proper from a three year stint in Black Canyon City north of town…unbelievable view of the moon and stars there! I’d just sit on my porch and watch the full moon come up, wondering when we’ll go back.
I can just imagine. Watching Armstrong and Aldrin (dramatized though it is) look at each other when they seem to fully realize that they are sitting on the surface of the moon was just priceless!
My all time favorite reaction to touchdown was Al Bean and Pete Conrad. Dea, I won’t mention it here so that you can enjoy it fully. It’s in the Pt VII – “That’s All There Is”.
Yeah, but them looking at each other, really did happen. Being how they were nearly out of gas, alarms going off, and the weight of history on their shoulders.
One of the greatest series of all time. I remember thinking the Apollo 1 episode was one of the most powerful hour of drama I had ever seen when I first viewed it. The LEM episode and the rock episode are also great.
I love that show! We used to watch it all the time in the Art Department!
That was an excellent series. They did a great job not redoing stuff already done. It still gives me goose bumps to watch it.

Not to forget all these great actors

Pity the whole Apollo program was faked. They got the 400,000 people who worked on it to lie continuously for 40 years.
*this is a joke*

Speaking of From the Earth to the Moon, “Lee Silver” was in an episode of Voyager, and “Frank Borman” was a Vulcan on Enterprise.
And in the Tom Hanks universe, “Buzz Aldrin” played Gus Grissom in That Thing You Do!

Nice! Never saw the series before. Was nicely done. Though I could do without the subtitles.
I used sub-titles in the video capture because I’m hearing impaired

Dea, This series defies any superlatives I can think of. It’s one of my all time favorites. You are in for an incredible treat.

Just watched this episode yesterday! I have to agree with Doug – it was a classic reaction!
I also loved Pete’s reaction when he stepped down onto the moon too.

Thanks for posting this! I’ve now got to dig out my dvds and watch them again… what a great miniseries.
