Agreed, well done Doug! I really would be interested in the entire journey they took, based off of this one shot. So many stories, very cool and thank you again for posting these gems! I call these types of CGI ‘visual verse’.
Last night I ask to see more views in the original post for the Connestoga, and here she is, thanks Doug, even better if you rendered some orthographic views for us fellow 3d artist!Enterprise had it problems but new ship designs wasn’t one of them, some of the best Starships in the Trek universe.
Wow. Every time I see a new shot of The Conestoga, it looks better. Its too bad Ent wasn’t more about human expansion. I would loved to have seen more designs like this!
Man, the Conestoga’s cool! I’d say it’s just about a perfect visual bridge between the Phoenix and NXs. Dig the nods to the Valiant and DY-500s, unless I’m imagining them.
It’s the only other design I’ve seen that I’ll admit could’ve been a suitable NX-01.
Would I be right in guessing the deck count on SS Conestoga at eight? I’m simply guesstimating by eye-ball here, so I could be wrong by one in either direction here.
Presumably has landing gear, for when they arrived at Terra Nova they took it apart and built housing out of its bulkheads. It took the ship, what, nine years to get there?
Love the TOS homagé, with spikes on the front of the nacelles. Mr. Drexler did you ever consider having those on Enterprise NX-01?
A brilliant design, definitely one of Trek’s and John Eaves’s best. I think there was a general consensus on John’s blog that this would’ve made a very good NX-01, being cool enough the please the producers and fans, but also looking very appropriate for that stage in exploration. Maybe in later seasons of the show the hero ship, or perhaps sister ships of the class could’ve had the beginnings of saucer modules added to the front to show progress being made toward the layout of the Constitution class.
Yes indeed it is turning out to be a good looking ship.
The real question though for colonization though, is just how many colonists, and how stored aboard?
In other words asleep, or awake? Asleep, then you can stack them like cordwood. Awake, and people object to than. They want to move around, which means fewer colonists, and therefore a less likely chance of the colony surviving.
Nine years intransit people would get on everybody’s nerves.
I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m really digging the way the nose of the ship almost pays homage to the Nostromo. I too would have loved to see a lot more “conventional” ship designs like this one.
When I read the RSS feed description “Connie”, I expected something completely different, but this is better. I share the opinion of #14 that this would have been the better series ship than the design of NX01. I too think the saucer was introduced too early.
Seriously though, this would be a perfect prequel ship IMHO.
There seems to be an idea that the saucer came first. Well, I imagine that a secondary hull type ship came first that evolved from the Phoenix and then the idea of a sphere and saucer being added onto that came into fruition over the next hundred years.
Is it possible that this was also the design of the SS ‘Valiant’, whose disaster buoy was found by USS ‘Enterprise’ in “Where No Man Has Gone Before”? I liked this design, and it’s a shame wasn’t seen more often in the episode.
Also, what was the ship flying over the Moon in the opening credits of ‘Enterprise’ between ‘Phoenix’ and NX-01, and can we have a picture of her? My guess is it is the ship we see young Archer and his father building in the prologue of “Broken Bow”.
Could there have been more than one of these ships making the first runs out-system from Sol? I remember liking the spotting of one on Vanguard‘s first novel’s cover.
Awesome — easily one of my favorite ships from Enterprise. The big, sleek ships are good and all but I have a certain affection for the more workmanlike ships of science fiction. Looks like a very plausible early design while retaining that Star Trek feel. I like the off-center TOS style navigational deflector, it’s a nice touch. Don’t know if you’d call the Conestoga beautiful exactly, handsome might be a better term but it’s great whatever you call it. Love the color as well.
“Beautiful” wouldn’t have been necessary. No one would call the Apollo landers “beautiful” – to use a real-universe example – save for the fact they got the job done.
Nice! It would have been fun to have seen the story of the crew of this ship. This image is very enticing and makes me want to know more about that story!
I’m currently building a website to fill the blank spots in Earth’s history in Star Trek between 2020 and the foundation of the United Federation of Planets. However, the website is a temporal one to discuss the texts online and in the long run I’d really like to use some of your designs to illustrate the articles (e.g. the Connestoga). Would there be any terms on which this would be possible?
That’s a great shot. I’ve never seen the Connestoga from that angle before.
Thanks Doug, you da man!

Doug,
Who desigened this ship was it you, John Eaves, Rick Sternbach?
JWSJr.

Excellent! Great to finally see a new angle of the Connestoga.

Wow thats sweet! lighting is so nice..
I gotta agree, Brandon. Very sweet render with the angle and lighting!

Wow, what a great shot. In a way, I can see a lot of the Defiant in her.
That’s a gorgeous shot. thanks, Doug!
I am really liking this design, especially as I see more of her.
Best,
Alex

The story behind the flight of the Conestoga would be worth a mini-series for TV in and of itself, I’m thinking.
I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m really digging the way the nose of the ship almost pays homage to the Nostromo. I too would have loved to see a lot more “conventional” ship designs like this one.
Thanks for putting them up Doug!

I love this flying warp core

^ Heh, that’s warp reactor in the 22nd Century. A core would look like a flying Barber Shop’s stripey poll. :p
Don’t they call it Warp core on Enterprise (22nd Century) too?
Very dignified view.
Thanks for sharing!

Ta muchly, and have a good one!
The ship flying over the moon was called the SS Emmette by the production crew, and there’s a detailed post on it here, about a couple months back!
Here’s the Emmette link, Mirren:

Those front row windows make this thing look huge.
