Is Doug Drexler Dead?

This is actually a thread on the Trek BBS.

I have to admit that was sort of a strange feeling to read that. On the other hand it gave me some insight to what Mark Twain felt when he said that ” The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated!”

We are starting up “Caprica”. Starting a new show rolling is a whole other animal. My focus is there. I’ll be around on the weekend. In the meantime I am still alive, I just happen to be at the crest of a scary new adventure.

Best!

BSG – “Unfinished Business”.

Boxing

When BSG finished up, they gave us a beautiful hardbound book with incredible behind the scenes shots of day to day life on the show. One of my favorite pages are on set shots from the episode “Unfinished Business.” I thought it was an incredible out of character show.

Even when the crew of the “G” gets a chance to let their guard down,  it’s painful.

The Nausican Begat The Xindi

Nausicaan_Fighter_000

Waste not, want not. The Nausican begat the Xindi, and that begat something expensive down the line when we really needed it.

Benjamin Franklin must have been watching Star Trek when he said… ” Beware of little expenses: a small leak will sink a great ship.” If we had a good design that was rarely seen, it wasn’t unusual to “repurpose”.  http://drexfiles.wordpress.com/2009/07/25/deja-vu-all-over-again/

Todays subject is the Xindi repurpose of a Nausican design. Here now with some background is Professor Jörg -

” The ship was seen, as a Nausicaan raider, in “Fortunate Son”. The model appeared again, completely unchanged, as a science vessel of an unnamed species that attacks Enterprise in “Bound”. The model was modified and Xindi-fied to appear as a Xindi-Insectoid patrol ship in “Stratagem” and “Azati Prime”. In the first episode, it was only part of the simulation seen through the simulation ship’s window. In “Azati Prime” it was seen for real as an underwater craft used by the Xindi-Insectoids.” – Jörg

BSG Composer Bear McCreary with Katee Sackhoff “All Along The Watchtower” Live

This just in from John Pearse:

Doug, wasn’t sure where to post this. The BSG fans are bound to enjoy these recordings of Bear McCreary’s June concert, also featuring Katie Sackhoff on the piano. The rendition of All Along the Watchtower rocks so much. :D

Shot at the Grand Performances Series in Downtown Los Angeles.

Note from Bear McCreary “Kara Thrace herself, Katee Sackhoff, joined me on stage at the grand piano to play Kara Remembers I played the left hand part, and she plucked out the Final Four Theme, just as she did in the climax of Someone to Watch Over Me. Once we had the Final Four Theme going on the piano, the band snuck in, building to Heeding the Call and finally All Along the Watchtower.

Deja Vu All Over Again.

A penny saved is a penny earned, and nothing on Trek demonstrates this old adgae better than the multiple retooling of this CG model for Voyager. Let’s join Jörg  for the lowdown -

Vidiian

This ship was first seen as the Reptohumanoid starship in “Parturition”. On Voyager, it was the first alien vessel completely realized using CGI. A few episodes later, the model appeared as a Vidiian starship in “Deadlock”. To quote from an article Bernd and I wrote some time ago:

“…the front end with the deflector was totally removed. The orientation of the Reptohumanoid ship was retained though. On the Vidiian ship, however, struts run from the nacelle aft ends to the ship’s aft end to which some sort of engine exhaust was added. The Reptohumanoid ship had no visible impulse engines whatsoever. The color was changed too, now varying from bright brown to ochre. The lighting of the windows may have remained exactly the same, whereas the engine color is orange instead of purple. The model returned in VOY: “Fury”, with slight revisions, essentially only to the tentacles that are used to cut holes into an enemy ship’s hull…”

After it appeared again as a Vidiian starship in “Fury”, the ships was seen as a Dralian ship in “Critical care”. Some more modifications included:

“..The deflector housing of the Reptohumanoid ship was added again, but now it acts as the aft section, the previous deflector now being the engine exhaust. The additional parts of the Vidiian ship are not present. The most significant alteration of the CGI model is that a cockpit window was added, along with other structures on the dorsal side, obviously to insinuate that the vessel is a lot smaller than in its previous incarnations. As a matter of course the many window rows were removed (or rather not illuminated) for the Dralian version. The ship also has a different color. It is overall beige, maybe greenish, with several clearly green areas. The lighting of the engines is much more extensive than on the corresponding parts of the Reptohumanoid version, and is yellow instead of purple…”

God Speed Harvey Frand

Harvey

Battlestar Galactica’s “beloved” line producer for all of its 5 years on the air died suddenly due to multiple health complications. He was 68. A 2008 Emmy winner, “Harvey as a producer had an ability to protect the writers and the most critical creative aspects of the production. He never allowed money or limited resources to be an excuse for not doing whatever was necessary to make the best picture,” a colleague praises. ‘My stock line about Harvey was always: ‘The guy just handles everything. I never hear from him.’ (And when I do, I KNOW the shit must’ve really hit the fan.) He truly made everything — and everyone — involved in Battlestar Galactica better than they deserved to be.”
