Doug, thanks so much for posting this link! I was out with my wife and friends on Friday and had to miss the broadcast (and my seven year old had other plans for our television during that time!). My wife and I are both big BG fans and we’re patiently awaiting Caprica. I’m hoping Virtuality gets picked up too. Thanks again.
Well, I found a way to watch it and thought it was pretty good. It’s a shame it was broadcast at such an awful time. Friday night and at the same time as tributes to MJ and Farrah Fawcett, I hear? That’s bad scheduling with bad luck piled on top. Didn’t Friday nights kill Trek?
Anyway, interesting and unusual premise and characters I can imagine watching develop over time. Was a bit iffy over the reality show aspect… it’s weird having characters look straight into the camera and talk to you. I loved the ending, though. There are lots of ways to interpret that final scene.
Oh and the effects were great, obviously. In the opening shot I was confused why the grass was CGI, until we got to see more of the VR and it became clear how you guys had approached those scenes. I really liked how that was done. Hope we get to see more.
Just watched Virtuality. I agree that it’s an interesting show and I certainly was left wanting more, but I have a real problem with the characters arguing all the time.
I mean, NASA -in real life- would go out of its way to ensure that the crew meshed on every level; professionally, personally and psychologically and yet the crew of the Phaeton seemed to be at each others throats a lot. It seems to me that the principal cause was the reality show aspect and I can definately understand the crew hating being watched all the time. All of which creates tension and some animosity among the crew as well as resentments towards the reality show crew members, which surely any mission control would want to avoid. After ten years like this, the crew’ll probably end up killing each other!
My point is that the VR modules are there to enable the crew to have some privacy and yet if they just shut down the reality show and ripped out the cameras in crew quarters, that would give the crew all the privacy they’d need. By have the additional pressure of “entertaining” the folks back on Earth, the mission is surely being risked and that’s why I’d have voted no and returned to Earth. If the crew can’t get along then the mission will surely fail.
NASA would probably never allow such a thing on a real life mission and they would surely pick a crew that isn’t made up of such disparate individuals.
I *did* watch the show on Fox…though not because there was any advertising alerting me to the broadcast. I found out about it through a thread on Starship Modeler that afternoon and immediately programmed my DVR to record it in case I forgot to watch it.
I enjoyed it quite a bit…great cast, great FX, and a great set-up for a series that will probably never see the light of day. (ratings are in, and it looks like it tanked so hard, it was the lowest-rated broadcast in Fox history. Gee, what a surprise… )
I appricate you linking the streams, Doug. You really did a nice job with the CGI. And I was surprised Kari Wahlgren was the voice of Jean. I’m really fond of her as a voice actress.
But now for the show itself. I’ll probably get some flak on what I’m about to say, but really the show was just “too much”. There was so many plots that it was too obvious where the direction was going if it became a series. Like Jean so much like Hal, that I could easily imagine some kind of struggle with the AI later on (which I wouldn’t be surprised the end was a result of it). Then the drama with the crew, they were too quick to conflict with one another.
The pilot probably would’ve been more accepted if it was an hour long and lead to their departure and ended with the Orion drive being activated. But that’s me talking.

Those sites only work for people in the US… sadly we British DrexPhiles will have to find alternate methods to watch it.
As a fellow British DrexPhile, I’ll be joining you in finding an atlernative source. BTW I love the term ‘Drexphile’
Same goes for the German Drexphile
DrexPhiles! Very clever! I’ll probably be borrowing that!
By all means…

Ditto. Shame that, was looking forward to watching it. Hope Virgin get it over here in Blighty.

Fox Direct and Hulu have no love for us in Japan!
No love in Canada either.
Odd when you consider that FOX and just about everyone else considers Canada part of their DOMESTIC market.
Oh well, I am sure it’s out there somewhere. Too bad that one would have to go looking for it though.
