Brandon is akin to a sci fi Santa! You never know when the sound of the sleigh is going to thump on the roof, and a shiny new toy is going to will drop down through the chimney! For the first time ever, we get a really good luck at the Malon shuttle, hinted at about a week ago here : http://drexfiles.wordpress.com/2009/06/20/toxic-tanker-voyager/ where the rascals can be seen escorting Toxie. This ship was designed by Brandon and Dan Curry. Let’s see what B has to say about it -
I remember that I came up with the design for the Malon shuttle directly in the 3D application, and Dan Curry approved it in house.. we needed something quick. My thinking was an industrial looking steel hull construction meant to shield the crew from toxic gasses and radiation.
Dan was always fun to work with! His understanding of art always had a positive impact on the show. To be frank, some some of the Foundation Imaging supervisors where intimated, but for me it was like working with a old friend from day one. He would come by Foundation once or twice a week to check up on shots, then spend the rest of his time going over details with me… that is when he was not telling a joke or two… and he was funny!
(Above) Don’t be confused! It’s the bottom!
A little seen design, as evidenced by these screen caps courtesy Jörg -

Who doesn’t love rust. Are those observation windows on the bottom?
The profile view reminds me of the Nautilus from the 1954 version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea…
it is amazing how much effort and detail was put into things that were barely or rarely seen. Merry Christmas, indeed! I like it’s simple lines, yet it doesn’t really look like much that we’ve seen, except maybe in the 1954 version of 20,000 Leagues.
The grills on the rear of the engines are a nice touch; I like the look with the yellow glow.
The bottom does look like it has observation windows, was that the intent? And where would the bridge be on this little guy?
Thanks everyone! I do love old Victorian designs and the craft was intended to look like a min sub of sorts that could dive into the toxic wast and back to the ship. the shuttles also run off any hi jacking pirates that could use that sort of thing.
Below on the craft are not windows but more like directed impulse power for flight control.
I liked all of the Malon ships because of that great heavy industrial feel. Its like steampunk, just without the steam. Sometimes you just want hard angles, straight lines, rust and rivets!
Never cared for the Malon. The whole idea of “antimatter waste” was just so silly. The only residue of a matter-antimatter reaction is pions and neutrinos. The only way I can rationalize it is either as some artifact of the Malon’s antimatter manufacturing process or maybe some component of their warp cores that’s transmuted into a radioisotope by the gamma radiation from the M/AM reaction.
thats the way i see it also the waste still coul have some use as to making dirty tec.
Nice! I’ll be sure to watch more closely for this shuttle when I start my run through the Voyager DVD’s.
Thanks again, Santa Brandon! I love hearing the stories behind the models and the thought process that resulted in these fantastic designs!
