Toxic Tanker – Voyager – UPDATED!

ToxicTankerR002-a

Brandon MacDougall rendered this shot of “Toxie”  fresh baked…  for you folks right here, right now.

“I don’t have a whole lot to say about the tanker, except that I wanted it to look massive, which the large spherical tanks seem to  accomplish. The spew nozzles are there, along with lots of supporting  hardware like the carapace/spine, brackets, tubes, and so on. I  didn’t develop a real style for the shapes and surfaces until the  later mega-tanker, which relied heavily, so to speak, on slightly  streamlined and repeating parts with a good old retro feel. Think  steam and diesel locomotives.” – Rick Sternbach

(Below) Rick’s concept sketch for “Toxie”. This is a different look for Rick, having an almost Moebius irreverence about it

Thanks for sharing Rick! I like the final drawing showing the slant cut of the nozzles, but it doesn’t look like they happened that way in the end (?). I think the final model is fantastic…what a great concept! It appears very close to the concept sketches; is it what you were looking for?

Thanks for keeping the parade of great posts going, Doug. :)

Thanks for the images! Great shots of the big ol’ stinker! :-) And the Malon shuttle is included as well! Can we please have a blog entry about that shuttle or maybe a side-view? It only appeared on screen for a few frames and was never clearly seen, it would be great to finally get a close look at it.

That ship has some of the best industrial look that I’ve seen in Trek. It really gives a feeling of menace. Everyone who sees it has to wonder what its carrying and how bad must it be if its corroding the whole ship! Great work and thanks for the shots.

The bottom sketch is obviously not the way the final turned out, but it is part of the evolution. The mega-tanker and the Malon escape pod, having come after, are much more in line with the style seen in the renders.

It has a wonderful steampunk atmosphere about it, I like it. :D

    Thanks for another great addition.
It wasn´t until the Starship Spotter book (one of my all-time favorites) that I really learned to appreciate the beauty in Malon designs.

Toxic tanker was a lot of fun to build and texture and as always getting plans from Rick and the art department made the building a snap.

Once built the ship was off to “Q” for the final steamer effects of green gas “not shown in the rendering ” back then it was over 1 hr for the gas to render one small frame.

I try to send some pics of the shuttle and have Doug post them for us if he likes..

“I didn’t mean to say the Enterprise should be hauling garbage. I meant to say it should be hauled away AS garbage.”

The tanker design reminds me of some Chris Foss designs that were done for the abandoned Alejandro Jodorowsky version of Dune in the early 70’s.

  10. June 20, 2009 at 12:22 pm

Andrew – Except that mine aren’t covered with yellow and black stripes. :) Also see Foss’ Leviathan design for ALIEN. A similar approach on my part; completely unintentional.

Awesome design, eh. Very cool and unique. Great model and renders as well. Nice fleshing out of Rick’s inks into 3D, Brandon.

    Thanks all you guys!

I’m a big fan of the Malon shuttle, but it has a pronounced Kazon feel about it to me.

What a great design. I remember seeing this ship for the first time on Voyager, and having an overwhelming urge to go take a shower afterward. :D

So gross-looking, but in an awesome way.

Brandon – Whoa! 1 hour to render a frame of the gas? Thank goodness for today’s faster computers?? Great model! The textures really give this thing that menace to the environment look.

deg, my copy of ST: Action! arrived today as well! It looks fantastic! My thanks to Rick as well for recommending the book.

Cool, was there 2 similar designs, another one ‘a super tanker’?

    Barrie – (haha!!!)

I never liked the Malon; I thought they were a right horrible bunch that needed a slap particularly after Janeway and Torres ahowed them how to use technology to clean up their act!
Their ships were depicted as quite grusome places to be aswell particulary as it contrasted so much to what Voyager was like to live on. A Malon ship would have even a Klingon wanting out!

Great renders Brandon (includes another nice planet!); thanks to yourself and Rick for submitting the pics and cheers Doug for posting! :)

Andy – There was a nine-tank mega-tanker that appeared in a later episode, along with an escape pod from the same ship. Similar design with the backbone covering the tank clusters.

  19. June 21, 2009 at 11:56 am

“Juggernaut” featured that larger tanker and the escape pods.

  20. June 21, 2009 at 2:28 pm

I always liked this ship. It would have been generally great to see more of such utilitarian vessels.

Any chance to see the “Juggernaut” tanker? So far I have only a quick side view that I composed. I based its size on that of the superstructure of the previous tanker, rather than on its tanks (so the megatanker would be smaller).

  21. June 21, 2009 at 3:54 pm

Bernd – The intent with the mega-tanker was that the tanks were the same size as the ones in the original tanker, making the mega-tanker quite mega. Regardless of the -appearance- of the superstructure. It certainly would be longer because of the fourth cluster of tanks (fore-aft), as well as much wider because of the now double row as seen from the top. Also taller, because of the bottom group of four tanks.
