I’ve always loved the Jupiter Station emblem. I thought that it was well designed, like all things Trek, and I’ve always appreciated that. My personal favorite Trek seal however is the Starfleet Command seal and I’ve always been curious when it was first designed and used. I think that it was sometime in DS9 but I’ve never been sure. I was wondering if anyone knew and I think that it would be another excellent thing to learn about.
I love this behind-the-scenes info. This site is truly indispensable.
I’ve always loved Trek logos and crests like this.
I just started messing around with Adobe Illustrator relatively recently, and, well let’s just say there’s a reason she gets paid for this and I don’t. Yet.
I find it great for making my own orthos and guidelines for 3d stuff, though I probably make it in the most egregiously inefficient way possible.
A Trek fan who goes by the screen name “Reverend” has made over a hundred Star Trek seals. Some are redraws of actual seals/logos used on Star Trek, included the Jupiter Station emblem, and some are original seals for organizations referenced but their logos/seals were never seen. My favorite one of his is the Starfleet Security seal he created. All of this Star Trek logos can be found here:
He also has a thread on the Flare Sci-Fi Forums called “Logos, logos, everywhere.” There are three of them and he is currently working on B5 seals. These forums can be found here:
I just thought I’d let everyone know about this as I have personally enjoyed his work and I used many of his seals/logos as some of my Star Trek backgrounds.
Yeah, I remember seeing the Starfleet Command (SFC) seal in several VOY episodes including “In the Flesh” and the Pathfinder/Barkley episodes. I only remember seeing it twice in DS9, once in “The Changing Face of Evil” when Starfleet Headquarters was destroyed and in “The Dogs of War.” There are probably more but I can’t think of them right now. I do remember loving the seal and always being impressed by it.
Well that certainly puts my effort to shame! I’m quite surprised by the level of detail, though it looks as if she’s put an actual photo of Jupiter though one of those fancy vectorizing filter wotsit thingies. At least I hope so because if she did all those concentric rings by hand then she’s a dangerous crazy person and should be locked up in the home for mentally disturbed graphic artists!
Reverend, I disagree. Your efforts have been appreciated over the years by myself and most likely others. Like I said above, my favorite design is the Starfleet Security seal. In fact, the SFS seal is the one I’m currently using as my computer desktop. You are indeed a talented artist.
I find your observations regarding the Jupiter Station seal and Ms. Drapanas using an image of Jupiter in it. I wonder if Mr. Okuda or Mr. Drexler have any information about that. It is indeed a beautiful seal.
Nice! I’ve always enjoyed these types of details because they typically get that much screen time, but without them, the scene just wouldn’t be the same.
I noticed the seal on the station the first time I browsed over the station shots in the previous blog, but didn’t have time to investigate…what a treat! Very nice work, Ms. Drapanas! I love seals, emblems, badges and the like.
I wouldn’t mind more, like more detailed looks at the patches Mike used in the 602 Club from NASA and Trek. I also was freezing the frame while watching First Contact yesterday to see the large emblems in the bar at Cochran’s compound.
Thanks Mike for sending that one to Doug so quickly!
I’ve always liked the logos that have graphics spilling over the borders…call me corny. Masterfully done as always, but we can expect nothing less from the graphics masters. Thanks to Doug and Mike!
I think my favorite logo is that of the Academy. Maybe because of the rays of sunlight, maybe because of the overall shape. The MACO logo would be a close second.
The multi-level version of the emblem, where Jupiter and the red whoosh stood off as a separate layer, was especially nice.

Hm. I think I may have done that one for a Voyager episode, but I’m not sure.
Wow! Great work Ms. Drapanas!

Great work as always. It is nice seeing it in a clear graphic. Kudos to the team, Doug, Rick, Mike, et.al. Excellent work.

This is very nice. Was there a design decision to make this non-circular and non-triabgular?

I think the Starfleet command seal was first seen (on a yellow flag) during Worf’s trial in “Rules of engagement”.

Here’s the first appearance of the logo from “The swarm”:
