DS9’s weapons systems were upgraded with top of the line starfleet gear. This was a pop-up phaser bar which was deployed from when the station came under attack . Joltin’ Johnny Eaves designed it. Meinenger built it. You can see several different scales. The smaller bars went with the station model. The large “hero” bar was built for an oversized section of station.
I love this upgrade to the station.
It makes me laugh that is few eps the FX team made the mistake of having them fire torpedoes instead of phasers.
Could have even happened as early as The Way of the Warrior.
The sails fire torps, but the bars should not. Although in the TOS writers guide, Roddenberry describes “squirts” of phaser fire. If they were short enough squirts, they might be perceived as photorps.
But a “squirt” of phaser fire be a short line moving away for the ship/ station (like a tracer fire in the dark), wihle a torpedoe that has been fired has got more of a “glowly star” look to it.
This has been seen in TNG, DS9 and VOY.
I believe you!
Sorry Going a little HARD CORE TREK FAN GEEK! LOL
I some time get a liitle too into the small details of Trek.
Set phasers to proximity blast! And then they look like torpedoes.. at least in “Balance of Terror”.
I see you posed with a ruler, especially for Boris
Thanks Doug for showing this, it is a pleasure to read your blog. My Star Trek geekyness knows on bounds.
Cool Doug!
Here are some scans for the ST Magazine of sketches of the phaser banks. LOL It took me a half an hour to find the right magazine.lol

I guess the smallest variety were just plant-ons to the model. I imagine it would be difficult to work around the internal CFL tubes.
The middle size was used for the scaled-up station quarter, I take it?
Sweet. It was a great idea to conceal weapons to not affect the overall look of the station. Always thought it was a bit filmsy that they had nothing to defend themselves with in the pilot episode
I may have done a “fist-pump… Yes!” when I saw the new weapons being deployed in Way of the Warrior. I was psyched that DS9 finally showed some muscle.
I never noticed the improved phasers firing torpedoes. I have been watching DS9 from the beginning with my GF and we are two episodes away from WOTW so I’ll pay particular attention to the station during the battle. Thanks Doug!
I think the “torpedo out of phaser array” shot under discussion can be seen in this article:
http://www.starshipdatalink.net/art/armingds9.html
…but it looks to me like there is a gap in the middle of the segments, and so my theory is O’Brien’s men cleverly mounted a microtorpedo launcher to fire out of that gap. Works for me
It wasn’t as flimsy as you might think, given UFP-Cardassian relations in general and Gul Skrain Dukat’s particular attitude problems at that point. Plus, why leave anything behind you don’t have to that a “threat” force might repurpose to suit themselves?
I liked the beefier station with the new rotary torpedo launchers looking good. Thanks for working those out, John. Thanks for the look at these phaser bars…I always like the behind the scenes stuff!!
On the side, I thoroughly enjoyed the Top Gun post…loads of fun! I wanted to comment but didn’t have time, and there were so many points to discuss in that one.
I actually went to the Top Gun air show at Miramar NAS when they were stationed there in ‘87 on my honeymoon, believe it or not. I loved the Dorn story; it showed him who’s really famous, right?
Thanks for all you’ve shared here. I look forward to more!
Hi Deanne! Wow! you lucky dog! I would loved to have been there for the Top Gun airshow!
Hi guys,
I have both the detailed weapons section, including the slide out piece, and the large pop up weapons – all from the Its a Wrap auctions. Love to display them so they pop out!
Any idea where the rotary launchers disappeared to?
Very cool Adam! They are beautiful pieces!
Those are just cool. I love the varying sizes, as per shot needs. Build as ya needs ‘em, eh.
Thanks Doug!
PLL,

Yeah, that was a great moment when those weapons pop’d out of nowhere. Like “nananan, see, Gul Dukat, we CAN defend ourselves”. The best lines during the battle “fire even numbered torpedo launchers….”. Like there are so many it’s easier to designate them that way.
Cheers
