Ferengi Shuttle

untitled-11

Jimmy Vanover just outside the Marathon Mill, with Quark’s borrowed shuttle.

In the DS9 episode “Little Green Men”, Quark, Rom, and Nog fall into the past, and crash land at Roswell in 1947. I thought it was a hysterically brilliant idea. One of the things I loved about DS9, was that it had the chops to be funny. In the show, the graphics department was asked to comp up a picture of the “alien spacecraft” socked away in a hangar. So Mike borrowed the minature, and we took it outside for some nice natural light. In the near future, I’ll get John Eaves to comment on his design, and run a pictorial on the miniature. In the meantime, enjoy these two shots.

    Doug,

These are just too much fun. I always enjoyed that particular episode.

What is absolutely amazing about nearly all the Trek models is the creation of something new blended with something weve all seen and know. The Jemmies look like bugs, the Defiant reminds one of an armored turtle. I don’t know about you guys but I see a manta ray in the NX-01. This ship looks like a fat little red crab.

I always had the feeling the designers of both this and the marauder had seafood in mind at the time, look at the “crab-claws” of this marvellous shuttle, and the marauder has a vague ocean-animal touch to it, and definetly the subvessel underneath the marauder.

This made my week, Doug. Thanks! I wish I had had photos like this when I was scratchbuilding my replica, but guesswork is half the fun. John Eaves, you say? The Pod must have been one of his first designs for “Star Trek.” Can’t wait to hear what he has to say about it.

Starship freak, the Marauder has always reminded me of a horseshoe crab. In any event, “The Next Generation” missed out on a great promotional tie-in with the hew-mon restaurant chain Red Lobster. The copywriters even had a tagline: “Red alert!”

A commentary on the shuttle would be nice, but if you want to cover some serious new ground in your blog (and bother John Eaves efficiently :) ), I would personally make the Dominion battlecruiser a priority (not the bigger “Valiant” battleship), along with some final sketches with labels and dimensions (depending on what was available). It’s one of the most important DS9 designs and there’s been no in-depth making-of article on that one to my knowledge.

Horsehsoe crab. Good way to describe the full-size Ferengi Marauder.

I always liked the Maurader and it’s little shuttle, but neither of them got enough screen time IMO. Thanks Doug!

I found the Ferengi to be unintentionally funny on TNG and purposely hilarious on DS9.

Thanks for the model pics, always have a special love for them.

Ya know, I learn so much in regrd to buildin’ in CG just from lookin’ at these pracs, eh. Thanks Doug. I love this design too. So fitting. Loved the eps. too, eh. :D

Now, BTW, I have wondered this for a while, having read your mentions of The Mill on several occasions, so can you please finally put this lil’ sehlat to bed for me, just what the Valhalla was/is the Marathon Mill, eh?

    Thanks dude!
