Enterprise escorts a Starfleet Transport Command vessel.
An image I planned to use for the Ships of the Line calendar, but Pocket Books was not able to secure the rights to use Franz Joseph’s design. Just ran across it. Thought is was fun!

Very Nice! Any information on the ship Name, Registry Number?
Thanks!
It looks like NCC-3802, the second ship in the Ptolemy class. That would make it the USS Al Rashid if I am not mistaken.
This is fantastic – I love the TOS Joseph Designs. Post as many of these shots you can – they scream TOS Trek to me
Damn shame about the rights issue.
(looks in his old FJ tech manual)…Yup, it’s the Al Rashid all right.
Wow, what a stunning image! It’s great that even though it couldn’t be shown, there’s still a respect for Franz Joseph’s ST work.
Could you post a wallpaper-size version, please?
I would have to find the file, and rerender it. Not impossible. – Doug
Franz Joseph – the first kitbasher?
I hope this isn’t a sore subject to inquire about, but I keep hearing vague references to a falling out between Mssrs. Joseph and Roddenberry, leading to the latter’s drafting of the “no odd-numbered nacelle” rule. Is there any truth in this? If so, what was the falling out about?
Again, if my question is a taboo one, feel free to delete it.
That is a totally cool image! I like it! Very impressive, Doug.
As Dwight said, definitely a shame about the rights. That would have made a beautiful calendar image. Oh, well.
Best,
Alex
LM Oliver: Trekplace.com has a series of interviews with Franz Joseph and his daughter, Karen Dick, and a history of FJ’s interactions with Trek. http://www.trekplace.com/franzjoseph.html
This site also has an interview with some guy named Drexler. http://www.trekplace.com/dougdrexler.html
Doug: If it’s not too much trouble. Thanks!
Excellent!
Yeah, too bad about the rights issue. Can’t wait to see what you came up with for the Calendar instead.
Regards,
Rob
Hi Rob! My page does not compare to what you’ve come up with. I think yours is my favorite one this year, right after Andy Probert’s. – Doug
I did love those ships and I remember being so excited when we saw the designs flash by on monitors in the films. Great image and great concept! More of those images on SotL calenders!
I must admit that I was never a big fan of the comprehensive container concept in Franz Joseph’s STTM. For cargo – sure. But I don’t what to imagine travelers in a container, as spacious and luxurious it may be inside, because I want to see impressive spaceliners!
Anyway, that’s a very nice rendering!
But the funniest thing is how absurdly unrelated the “Possibly related posts: (automatically generated)” are:
* Franz Ferdinand – Live Lowlands Festival ‘ 05
* Live From Roswell Guest Joseph Palermo, paranormal investigator and bigfoot…
* LIVE@GCP 08/11/08
As much as I ever found Franz Joseph’s building-blocks designs annoyingly simplified, it’s images like this one that shut me up very quickly. Long live Max Rem!

Hi LM! I know nothing of this. Paul Newitt might know. – Doug
Love the cgi from ‘Come What May’
Sweet Doug. Just a beautiful image. And I look forward to seeing SOTL 2010, yours, Andy’s, and Mr. Wilde’s, esp. if that is the same Mr. Wilde I have seen on the forums, as his work is always awesome and is well-deserved to be in SOTL.
I like that Franz Joseph design. Not so crazy about his E blueprints though.
