I met Trek director Les Landau for the first time while I was working on Dick Tracy. Les was Tracy producer Jon Landau’s brother, and when anyone toured the sets, the makeup trailer was high on everyone’s list.

.
Flash forward a couple years, and I am firmly entrenched in the Star Trek production machine as a makeup artist. I see Les regularly on stage now, and he approaches me about doing some storyboards for an upcoming episode. Naturally I’m delighted, and here you have them.
Times Arrow turned out to be a favorite of mine, and it actually turned out to be the last makeup work I ever did before migrating to the art department… but the real bonus making up Jerry Hardin as Mark Twain! More on that in an upcoming article, including how my ears ended up on Data’s head.
Wow those storyboards are kiss ass! I can understand why you got the new position, and great move! These boards really capture what we ended up seeing onscreen. Another very interesting and awesome post Doug.
Sorry I meant to say “kick ass” guess someone needs to get away from his job more! … how embarrassing!
That’s hilarious! You made my day! Thank you for the very funny, and very kind words! – Doug
Storyboards break up the task into understandable chunks. Another great way for us to learn how the work is done.
Also, I just recently learned that Jerry Hardin’s opening monologue in “Time’s Arrow” was based upon an actual argument Clemens had about evolution and natural selection with a self-styled pundit of his day, conducted in written essay form. Clemens mopped up the floor with him.
It’s nice to know that the episode got the facts right, at least as far as Twain’s opinions of science were concerned.
