I grabbed that folder the TOS stage models were in, gave it another shake, and TNG fell out!
One of the longest in use sets in Hollywood. This basic configuration was built for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, used through the TOS feature series, and then redesigned by Herman for TNG.
Far from finished, I had barely gotten the walls lit on this CG model before being called away on one of good Sir Herman’s famous OBTW’s.
(OBTW, like “Oh-By-The-Way, I was just on 18 and I noticed we could use some graphic tape in there, or Oh-By-The-Way, Rick Berman wants to see those concepts tomorrow morning instead of next week.”)
Its cool to see an update TNG version of a Matt Jefferies style Model. One question, is the room across the holodeck doors Data’s Quarter?
Yes, and it was was Kirk’s quarters in the movie series. – Doug
Looks like a cool place to work. And by “cool,” I mean “blazing with hot lighting rigs.”
Interesting to note that it was always freezing on set, no matter how hot it got outside! It was always jacket weather on stage! – Doug
That sounds like some aggressive A/C you guys had. In work clothes or synthetic costumes, I’d love it.
The air conditioners were the size of tractor trailers! – Doug
So, Pakled design?
What a great image! I love the fact that these sets were left standing all those years after TMP and then revamped. Are there any photos of these sets while they were in construction? Also, I seem to recall that there was a lower level of the engine core that we rarely saw. Was there a hole in the floor or was the set built off the ground?
Awesome. Don’t suppose you have any Voyager sets in that folder?
Thanks Nick! I’m afraid not. I was on this jag before Voyager existed, so I never got around to it. – Doug
Nice to find this blog, Doug.
I think this is a good place to plug my site where people can find more information about the stages we all know and love:

As an aside, there’s a little inaccuracy in the 3D model.
There is some space (including a door) between the “northern” wall of the transporter room and the circular corridor. It was used as Wesley’s lab in the nanite episode.
Cheers.
Hi Pat! Thanks for the kind words! The model is incomplete. Love to finish it sometime!
Very cool site you have there!! – Doug
How much fun would it have been to walk these sets!
Nice model, Doug!
That’s just awesome.

Oh Please do finish this model if you ever get chance! After seeing the TOS set cardboard model in Justman’s ‘The Star Trek Sketchbook’ I’ve been dying to start one for TNG.
The evolution of that set is quite awesome and this lit render looks beautiful.
Yep, still awesome passin’ through…

Nice work, Pal.
